OpenWorm is an open source project dedicated to creating the first virtual organism in a computer.
Simply put, a nematode worm with 300 neurons comprising of 100 cells is able to be simulated in a computer. It has been mapped and understood its genome has been catalogued. But could this be simulated in a computer exactly. Making this a truly simulated animal? In time this could be scaled up. It is a fascinating and is the beginning of something that could change the world to the point a human could be uploaded as a thinking feeling person in digital form! Maybe one day? But it all starts somewhere! Armed with AI and quantum computers? Who knows?
